6.02am

I am now on good morning! terms with the driver, because we recognise each other. I feel famous.

The orange handrails of the bus are worn down; the paint has faded at points, revealing a lighter colour underneath, like a skinned knee.

his morning, I’m thinking I could kill two birds with one stone. I read somewhere once that if you hold a smile for 10–60 seconds, it makes you feel immediately happy. Also, maybe if I do this for a bit, someone won’t sit next to me. It was pitch black when I left the house this morning. We stall in traffic, and somebody outside the window is sweeping the street. It’s suddenly light out; the sky is a flat square of chalk.
